Choose a warm spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for growing your plant. You may wish to supplement with a fluorescent or LED grow light during the winter months. Sprouting time varies by plant (see individual descriptions below) and herbs are usually ready to harvest in 2 to 3 months. These kits are designed for growing indoors, but you can also transplant outdoors in mid to late spring if you wish. If planted outdoors, plants will not return the following year if your location is outside of the hardiness zone ranges listed below. To dry herbs after harvesting: gently rinse to remove any dirt, tie together in small bunches using kitchen twine, and hang upside down for about 1-2 weeks until completely dry. Store dried herbs in an airtight container for up to one year. To make a tea from the dried leaves, steep in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes.
Lemon balm is said to support the immune system by offering potent antiviral and antibacterial properties, which can help ward off infections and strengthen the body’s natural defenses. Plants will typically sprout within 14 to 28 days and are hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Holy basil is a little different in taste from other basils, having a slightly more intense flavor with a hint of licorice that’s perfect for stir-fry dishes and spicy soups. It’s also known for its stress-reducing effects. Holy basil thrives outdoors in the warm climates of USDA zones 10 through 11. Typical growing time is 5 to 10 days until sprouting.
Mint aids in digestion by relaxing the stomach muscles, reducing inflammation, and promoting bile flow to help break down fats efficiently. Mint grows well in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8. In zones 9 through 10 it requires some shade, especially in the afternoon, and plenty of water. Mint can spread rapidly outdoors, so you may prefer to plant it in a large pot instead of directly in the ground. You can expect to see sprouts within 7 to 14 days after planting.
