Finding Success with Your Fundraiser – Part 2 of a 3 part series
No matter which of our easy and profitable fundraising programs you choose – spring bulb flower fundraiser, fall bulb and potted mums fundraiser, or our holiday Christmas wreath fundraiser – follow these tips for successful results.
We are continuing our mini series on finding success in fundraising. See part one to get started, it’s worth it! Now that your team is assembled and purpose defined, let’s move on to the next steps: determining your fundraising goal and identifying your target audience.
Step 3: Determine Your Fundraising Goal
When you decide to start a fundraiser, having a goal amount is essential. A goal can keep you on track and can help motivate your group members and community. When you have a goal, your supporters can see just how much their donation has helped you and how much you have left to earn. Just saying you need uniforms isn’t enough. Having a specific dollar amount does encourage just a little bit more from your supporters, especially when they see how far you have to go to reach your goal! If you set your class trip fundraiser at $1000 and you have $850 raised, then increase your goal to $2000! If you are close to your fundraising goal then your supporters are more likely to give a smaller amount or maybe not even donate at all. Don’t miss out on that last minute push!
Step 4: Identify Your Target Audience
Form a list of potential supporters. Friends, family, co-workers, local businesses, etc. This list will give you a jumping off point once your fundraiser starts and you will see success more quickly. Think creatively. It doesn’t hurt to ask, so the bigger the list the better! Fundraising can be numbers game. Think outside the box. Don’t focus only on your school members; contact local businesses, for example. Our wreath fundraiser is wildly successful, and the best groups are the ones that go for the target audience and always try that “one more thing” to move forward each year.
Once you establish that target audience, add to it – be creative! Local business will decorate for the holidays, they need wreaths. Set up a table at a local gathering spot, get your organization name out there and make some more sales to a new audience. Next year, include them in your target audience and think creatively to find another outlet. Never stop expanding!
