Fall Feature: Deer Resistant Alliums

Alliums are deer resistant, sun loving perennials!

Alliums are ornamental plants bearing flowers in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Also known as ornamental onions, these bulbs are grown for their appearance and not for culinary use.

Typical allium foliage is grass-like and grows only at the base of the plant. With a blooming range between late spring and early summer, Alliums fill in the gap between those first flowers of spring and the burst of peak summertime color.

These beauties are resistant to deer and rabbits, and are usually tolerant of drought once established. Alliums also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Additional Features of Deer Resistant Alliums

Gladiator Allium is one of the tallest varieties of ornamental onion available. It bears globe-shaped purple flowers up to 6 inches in diameter on stems as tall as 3 to 4 feet. Gladiator Allium is hardy in zones 4 to 8 and grows to a mature size of 36″ to 48″ tall.

The egg-shaped flowers of Drumstick Allium turn from green to purple as they bloom atop tall stems for an early summer show of color. This variety is best planted in groups of 20-25. Drumstick Allium is hardy in zones 4 to 11 and grows to a mature size of 24″ to 36″ tall.

Blue Allium features stunning, 1″ blooms made up of small blue star-shaped flowers. This award-winning allium naturalizes well and is easy to grow in rich, well drained soils with a sandy or gritty texture. Blue Allium is suitable for hardiness zones 4 to 10 and grows to a mature size of 18″ to 24″ tall.

Create a colorful display with Allium Rock Garden Mix, which includes Golden Garlic, Pink Lily Leek, and Drumstick Allium for a total of 25 bulbs (quantity of each within the package may vary). Allium Rock Garden Mix is hardy in zones 4 to 9 and grows to mature sizes of 8″ to 12″ and 24″ to 36″ depending on the variety.
