Fall Feature: Early spring blooming bulbs

Early spring blooming bulbs signal winter’s end!

We all love to see those first pops of early spring color emerging after a long, cold winter! The two varieties of early spring blooming bulbs in our fall fundraising program are Snow Crocus Mix and Glory of the Snow. As their names imply, you may even see them emerge before the final snowfall of the season in early spring.

Snow Crocus Mix (Crocus chrysanthus)

Our Snow Crocus Mix includes early spring blooming crocus in a variety of colors that often includes purple, yellow, and white. It’s best to plant crocus in clumps to stand out in the landscape. Plus, many gardeners plant them as a colorful border in flowerbeds around the outside of their homes. Each bulb (or corm) produces one to two flowers that open in the morning and close at night. Over time, the corms will multiply and create larger clusters of flowers. Snow Crocus Mix is suitable for hardiness zones 3 to 8 and grows to a mature size of four inches tall.

Glory of the Snow (Chionodoxa luciliae)

Glory of the Snow grows low to the ground, naturalizes easily, and is an excellent choice for borders and rock gardens. It’s best to plant in large drifts to create a colorful carpet of star-shaped blooms. These tough plants will thrive and survive an early spring snowfall, and they can self-seed and naturalize over time without getting out of control. Plus, Glory of the Snow is resistant to deer and rabbits. Glory of the Snow is hardy in zones 3 to 8 and grows to a mature size of three to six inches tall.
